Taxi fares in Korea are determined by local governments. Daejeon’s taxi fare is approximately 3,300 won. A basic fee is charged for the first 2km, and an additional 100 won is added for each additional 132 to 144m. These standards also vary slightly from region to region.
Kakao, one of the largest internet service providers in Korea, created Kakao Taxi. Kakao Taxi is gaining popularity in Korea even among foreign residents. Because the driver’s identity, etc. is clear, it is safer than other taxis and does not overcharge. If you download and use the free app, a taxi will come to you or ask for your location on the phone. Depending on the type of taxi you call, you may be charged a call fee of 1,000 won.
All taxis in Korea have a ‘meter’ that calculates the fare. Make sure the driver turns on the new meter when a customer boards the taxi. The new meter will display the base rate for that area. If the driver does not turn on the meter, you may suspect that he or she is trying to overcharge you. So you have to ask him or her to turn on the meter.
When catching a taxi on the street, you need to find a taxi marked “empty” on the taxi and call it by beckoning.
You don’t have to tip when using a taxi in Korea. However, there are many Koreans who say, “Keep the change,” and would not receive change because they get change back in units of 100 won. Then this money becomes a tip. Sometimes taxi drivers refuse a tip. This is not unusual in Korea. There are actually drivers like that.
Taxi fares can be paid by cash or credit card, regardless of the amount. If you think you are paying a rip-off, be sure to ask for a receipt. Once you receive the receipt, you can contact the taxi driver even if you left your belongings in the taxi.
The Ramada Hotel is located on the main street and can be dangerous to board. It takes about 5 minutes on foot from Ramada Hotel to Intercity Hotel.
